Bookmark topic
On my phone o can really feel it when i have GPRS on all the time. I lose quit fast 1 day when its constant on. The reason is when GPRS is not that good in your area than the phone will search more and oftenere than when its off..

As I understand it, GPRS actually uses the same channels and bandwidth as the voice communication so as long as you have a signal capable of handling voice communications then you also have GPRS capability (assuming you have it activated as mentioned earlier in this thread). This is why the blue GPRS triangle is either full or empty and nothing in between whereas the green triangle shows the actual signal strength available to the phone
for this reason GPRS does not "search" for a signal separately from the voice requirements and also this is why you can choose in the settings to allow voice while performing GPRS, at which time GPRS stops temporarily until the voice communication ends, or not allow voice while using GPRS.
as I'm not that good at explaining this, though I do have a reasonable understanding, a read of
this article (for example) might make it clearer
While I know that early GPRS capable handsets such as the T39 and T68 did consume 10-30% extra power when GPRS was turned on I think this was down to poor design of the handset and I personally now always leave GPRS activated because I don't want the inconvenience of having to turn it on and off every time I have a data requirement such as checking email etc, and am still happy with the battery life I get from more recent phones

I doubt it drains the battery, its just an indicater showing you have GPRS signal, thats all, just like the batt and call signal indicater!
Area info drains the battery!
