yes, if a handsfree with both mike and earbuds cut off works as an antenna, then a modded handsfree will also work.
It is the wire that acts as an antenna, and as I said, even a handsfree with mike or earbuds removed and atleast a 15cm length of cable hanging from the connector will give reception.
I modded two handsfree's (old mono ones for older phones), in order to listen to the radio via the phones speaker without having to plug in a full handsfree (the modded "antenna" is smaller and lighter to carry if you don't use the full handsfree). One had 15cm cable and the reception was there but poor. The other had about 30cm and the reception was good.
A modded handsfree, the type you are talking about, has well more than 30cm cable length, more than enough to provide reception for the radio.

I've cut one down to 1cm without noticable loss of signal.(or should I say the cat chewed it off there)

It is actually possible to have the radio on without having ANYTHING connected, as was the setup on the pre-release K750i we got in April/May. However, the reception was terrible - as you might imagine - with only Radio 1 (UK) - a particularly strong signal - being picked up, and even then only in certain areas.
I don't know if it's a setting that can be enabled with a bit of hacking of the firmware, but to be honest I doubt you would want to (well - on here, there's always going to be someone that wants to).

I tried this a year ago on my ex-K700i's handsfree (it was a no-brand 3$ handsfree). I only left the plug - cut the wire off completely. The radio worked perfect, with no noticeable quality loss, and picked up all the stations exactly as before, with the 'full' handsfree.
