In New Orleans at present hurricane Katrina has knocked out local communications and AM radio is the only thing working. If mobile phones had AM reception, these homeless people wouldn't be wandering around confused as to where to go...

Well, if they are homeless probably they don't have anything but the clothes they're wearing. If there is no power, where would they charge their phones? I don't think that peopke who are trying to save their lives are gonna hold on to their cell phones and chargers.

@defensive
the hell you're right!! these are very stupid questions...

@thami
Lazy? Try fitting a ferrite antenna for AM reception into a cell phone...

@ victorh017 - finally someone listens & reads before they type Thanks for agreeing mate.

Also to all the others - please do as victorh017 says and try to fit an AM radio antenna into a mobile phone, then create the software needed to programme it to listen for connections and build that into the firmware of your phone Then if you could listen out or life on another planet and report back, in say a few years time, then I would be most grateful

Duh! When your city is 80% under water and conditions are worsening, you take your cellphone with you to let you relatives know your still alive! Refugee centres will have power sockets no doubt. You may have to wait your turn though...

I don't know much about this topic but I can mention that I have a Sony SRF-220 credit card size am/fm radio. It literally is credit card size and about twice as thick.

I've had it for about 12 years and it has Sony "Tune into the world" with a celebratory icon saying "40 years Sony Radio Anniversary" (sorry I can't post pics from work but can post one later for anyone interested)

anyway, the point is that this is 12 years old and the AM side has always been very good, though not as good as the FM of course, and its in an incredibly tiny package and I still use it almost every day.

So as a non-expert I'm still curious why they couldn't take even the same electronics that are in this from all those years ago and shove them into a phone, or indeed use more recent components? not that I would want AM in a phone I guess, but...

btw, I feel a little less attitude would make this thread a bit better reading

It seems SE have listened or more likely have been thinking. So now they've teamed up with NTT DoCoMo for a phone with AM/FM and even TV. No camera though but pefect for a walkman Get that SE?
