I've just tried the same with my P910 on my laptop and I'm getting a similar message. I'll have a look tomorrow, but I would suggest starting your laptop in safe mode and remove any modem entries from device manager (apart from the inbuilt one in your laptop if it has one)
If you have WinXP set a restore point!

Try connecting with IR, On the IR menu on P910, select "modem". You will still need to ask your network provider to give you the settings required to use P910 as a modem.
That's how I use my P910 as a modem for my laptop. I'm with Orange, and they helped set it up.
