I use
www.ukreg.com for domains. .co.uk = £2.95pa and .com = £8.89pa. Their hostings not bad either.

how do u BUY a domain name? not just "use it for a year and pay per year" how do i get my own forever? (even though hosting may not be forever, i still own the name)

You can't buy a domain name for ever. However, you always get first refusal to register the name again when it's renewal date comes up so as long you pay the renewal fee pretty much straight away, nobody else can jump in and take the domain name from you

Nope, nobody can own a domain name for keeps. Some organisations are allowed to register the name for longer periods than us mere mortals but they can never really own it. And that's only if they own the trademark for the domain name. The name itself is their intellectual property, but the .com, .co.uk bit etc. belongs to ICANN or Nominet!

Hi
I have names registered until 2009, then at renewal time do another 5 years. Even after the renewal date the name is unavailable for (I think) 90 days anyway... so you can renew.
