lol what has george bush got to do with it?

Speed cameras are dangerous and should be banned. I seem to spend more time looking at side of road, bridges and speedo than i do looking where i am driving.

I have nothing against cops, but I do against the tactics employed, by what is obviously revenue gathering. (Wether government set or not is not the point, its the way in which they specifically go out to catch people and ignore the ones that DO need to be caught - though in the case fo any goverment revenue target, its just despicable)

Hell, i've seen speed camera setups here on the motorway (highway, freeway, autobhan, whatever it is in the country of the reader ) at the bottom of a hill. I mean come on....

Placing them in areas where speeding is known to be a problem (for any aucklanders reading, greenlane for instance ) or in accident prone areas where they might DO SOME GOOD is something I am ALL for.

Unfortunately speed cameras have gone from a deterrant to accidents to something completely different. When they were first introduced peoples attitudes were alot different. Now they're just seen as another cash cow. That to me, is a shame.

If they were just in specific places like schools etc i would be totally for them as they could help to save lives. But otherwise they are pointless, people don't spped less, only slow down when they are going past them, so this proberly causes more accidents than it saves esp on motorways where people are doing 100+ then slamming on there anchors to get below the 70mph mark.

Should also not be allowed to use mobile units after dusk
And the new style fixed cameras are an invasion of privacy as they take a photo of your face (uk)

if you are speeding and hence, breaking the law, you deserve to be issued with a fine or worse. i agree that they are used for revenue but if all people were keeping to the speed limit then the authorities would not be making (taking) this money. im all for confiscating cars from those that clearly do not obey rules. eg hoons.

I agree with you to a degree there twerg, most speed limits are correct and should be stuck to.

But for motorways and major trunk roads I believe the speed limit to be outdated and pointless. Over here the speed limit is 70 on motorways which was put in place when disk brakes, abs, air bags and all the other safety features we enjoy today were but a wet dream to the motorist. Most modern cars could cruise at 80-90 quite happily and I doubt there would be any major concequences.

People will mostly self regulate anyway, people wont go any faster than they feel safe doing. I bet you if we removed all motorway speed limits today then people in general wouldnt go much quicker than 80-90.

@twerg

I agree, persistant speeding is dangerous and offenders should be dealt with appropriately.

But as an example of speed camera mis-use, recently my brother in law was caught doing 32Mph in a 30Mph zone. Ok, technically he was over the limit, right? Sort of. The speed camera van was parked about three feet behind the 30Mph sign, my brother in law was actually slowing down from 40Mph, which was the previous limit for that stretch of road.

In my view, the speed camera crew were the criminals there, not my brother in law!
