The microphone for making calls is in the earphones jack so that is still on the phone if you switch to another pair of headphones, not as stated above.
I also use Shure earphones and the sound quality of the w900 with these is amazing for a mobile phone. The standard earphones are also really very good. The odd design is meant to isolate the listener from external noise and create a seal with you inner ear. They need to be inserted far more than regular earphones, they are meant to sit inside the ear canal. They are more painful if you don't push them in far enough to make a proper seal. Use the smaller rubber seals first and go bigger if needed. Imagine trying to get a waterproof seal and you have got it right, Once this is done the sound and bass are very good, far better than standard earphones. Another advantage is that you get far less sound leakage so you don't annoy others on the tube and you obviously benefit by not having other noice spoil the purity of your listening.
