That intepence from the software version you have...
In NY with T68 and R2E006 you see Voicestream in your screen and after you update to the latest version you see T-Mobile,
the new name for Voicestream.
The same happens and in Greece with GR Vodafone.
Before the update was PANAFON...

The name is stored in the phone and not on the sim. The sim only contains the country code and company code. If you use an old phone created during the time when the phone co. was nonexisted, you will see the code on screen. If youre using a new phone, it will interpret the code and display the name of the co. This is the reason why when you upgrade SW sometimes the name displayed will change.

An example is cophia's post in this thread. He said his code is 214-01. This no is stored in the sim
Mobile Country Code 214 = Spain
Mobile Netwrk Code 01 = Airtel Movil
And the interpretation is stored in the phone.

Cophia> my old phone is a t28, and it displays airtel, not blank... So you have to admit you were wrong

the phone has software to interpret what the SIM says to it.
the phone does not have all the networks etc built in to it.
sp SIM says this is my name so display this on ya screen mr.t68i and it does.
it can be changed by an ota message, but not a normal update one, it wud av 2 carry some sort of sw or toolkit upgrade cos thats wat the phone looks to for the sp name to display.
nuff sed. this is the bottom line and is correct for all gsm networks. and i checked with both t-mobile/virgin/and voda 2 double check its right.
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
*sorry im playing on a slide*

Hi,
the operatorname are in some way stored in the phone's firmware. For example here in Sweden we had an operator called Europolitan and their name is now Vodafone. After an update of the firmware their new name is shown in the display. I could be wrong but im pretty sure im right
And Yes you can change the name in the display, I have a friend that can. But you must have some really advanced equipment (like they have in the servicepoints). You have to download the e^2 from your phone (some "hardware" firmware in the phone). Then with a special program change the name for you operator in the code, save and then download the program to your phone again. I think it's another firmware then the one you usually update. And this is nothing an ordinary user can or should do. It's complicated and dangerous.
Put it IS possible to change the name in the display.

pxus - I said that I bet you would NOT see a blank name!!
Jabba is right - some phones do store the operator long and short names (like the old GH388 series phones). If the network code such as 214-01 (for Vodafone/Airtel in Spain) does not have a corresponding text in the phone or the SIM, then the code is usually displayed.
Okay, most operators have their name provisioned on the list stored on the phone as this takes precedence and makes it harder on virtual operators who share networks.
As for Nokias, they (most of them) have the ability to have EITHER the operator name OR a operator logo displayed. And you can modify the operator logo relatively easily (even make it blank).
Sorry, we're getting side-tracked!

Each country that i use my phone populates a differnet name on my T68i. While in the Orlando Florida i had AT&T Wireless. Then while i was in Toronto Canada i had Rogers AT&T

talk about blast from the past...i have WORLD written where my phone should say T-Mobile just like many Ericsson boxes, this stays the same no matter what phone i put my sim in....unless of course it goes in a Nokia where its been programmed to display a different Operator logo.
how did i do it...had a relative that worked for my service provider.
ps. bring back the old threads, new ones are crap
