I think it's actually quite subjective. No doubt the p990 may have all the bells and whistles, but it really depends on what the user really wants. It may not be wise to pay so much for the p990 if what you need is actually along the lines of a series60 symbian phone. This message was posted from a Nokia

Depends what you mean by best I suppose. Probably the most functional and sophisticated at the moment is the Imate JasJar, however it's very bulky and battery life can be an issue at times.

The P990 certainly looks promising and is definately a much better size, however there are concerns that by the time it is finally released, it's feature set might already be a little bit dated.

The Imate Kjam has to be my choice at the moment. Smaller than the JasJar but with nearly all of the functionality and a better battery life. I still haven't got one yet though, anyone got one for sale second hand?

As a 'all arounder' the Jamin is top of the crop buddy. Apart of the bigger screen (and size) there is nothing the other 2 imates can offer compared to the jamin. Only a lower res. camera ! The P990i is non existent atm. and even when released is no where near this top devices. I don't even want to comment further, but because some members may think otherwise (more with their hardes then brains) I will point out a few weaknesses: First no EDGE ! If you can't access a 3G network you must go back to 2002 standard (GPRS) . Second: slow wifi implementation. If you want to use it in a wifi network for Skype calls you must disconnect it after each and every call otherwise will pull your whole network speed down ! So basically you can't continuously monitor your incoming calls. Third and most important, it uses a proprietary OS, for which there is no software yet ! Both S60 and WM5 are already very popular. The N80 suffers a bit too because of symbians update but no where as bad as P990i. This message was posted from a Nokia 7650

Sorry bud, how could I forget. I love this country (South Africa) since I come here 20 years ago from Nuernberg, my home town. (Germany) I enjoy low level flying over the local game reserves, soaring, diving, hunting, off road motor biking in the open savanas. Is a well developed, amaizing country ! By the way, have I ever sore or cursed anyone here or on any other forums I post to ? ? ? I may not agree with your views but I certainly don't talk 'dirty'. And specialy for you here it comes - Greetings from South Afica. Mario I really greet you my friend - after all we share our love for cellphones althou we may disagree which one is the best.

@Mario:

On topic: Best smartphone? I would say, smartphone are like fine women (oh yes, fine women.....hmmmmmm...drool.....Er...Ahem). Well, basically everybody has their own tastes, 'you cant knock em' off till you've had em' all'. In my personal experience, Its best to keep an open mind. I currently use a Nokia N70, Treo 650, and imate K-Jam side by side, and have used a Moto A760i, Nokia 9500 and P910i in the recent past, and I'll say this: Neither of them are perfect.

The Treo 650 has nearly perfect PIM fuctonality, the fastest web browser, and near perfect Web-Rendering, has a beautiful 320x320 Screen (most Pocket PC devices have ony 320x240 on a screen twice the size). The largest software expandability (Freeware and otherwise), but looses out because Palm OS doesn't have very good Multitasking capabilities.

The Nokia N70. Well, The N70 seems like a phone, with the Smaphone features added just as an after-thought. The calender is crippled at best the contacts are too standard, and the software available for it is mostly fun-centeric, not productivity-centric (though it does have a couple of very decent productivty utilities like Quick Office etc.). I have seen better non-smartphones.

The i-mate K-Jam. The k-Jam has got pretty decent PIM, with probably the best outlook integeration. However if youre using a 3rd Party system in your organisation you may find yourself in a bit of a pickle. (I had to sync with Activesync, and import all the PIM data record by record, now I use Chapura, which does remote and local syncing for me, quite easily). The software available for Windows Mobile is slightly more Expensive then other platforms (Usually!). The integerated Internet Explorer is pretty decent, but not as good as the Palm's Blazer Browser. I think Opera will be better at following Web-Standards, however, the Beta version is buggy and unstable at best. The Multitaskoing capabilities are best utilised in WM2005. When a application is minimised, Windows Mobile, actually closes it, and keeps only a snapshot of it running in the RAM, somewhere in the background, thus it utilises less then half of its normal memory. Very convinient, and well designed. WM 2005 is also possibly the most stable of all the above (sound difficult to believe, right? )

As I mentioned I have used in the past a Moto A760i, which wasn't to my taste. Its much less of a smartphone, more of a Linux Powered non-Smartphone. Reason: The Moto uses a variant of Montavista Linux, which accully doesnt have a Kernel!!! It uses a modified Java VM in place of the kernel, hence crippling the very essence of its linux background. This sadly leaves no room for running linux native applications, unlike other linux powered handheld, just J2ME and Java Applications.

Lastly the Nokia 9500. I Loved this device, It had a beautiful, 640x240 (HVGA or Half VGA) screen. Its opera based browser had EXCELLENT support for all websites, and VERY FAST (possibly the fastest) EDGE connection of all the device out there. Alas It wasn't ment to be, its size was too large to just use off your hands, and if you were going to sit down and use it, you might as well use your Laptop. If only they made it smaller.

So, the bottom line is, none of the devices are perfect, and you should just try them and see which suits you. The K-Jam and Treo 650 suit me the most.

Damn That was long.
