quality and playbacksmoothness very much depends on the quality of the encoder used and how much you can alter the encodingsettings, and how well the encoder used can controll the bitrate you specify. You cannot generalize and say these or these settings are allways optimum as it depends on the encoder you use.

Generally speaking though you cannot have both a high bitrate and high number of fps and a low keyframeinterval.

If you want to encode in 25fps - you should never go above 150kbps and the keyframeinterval should be increased from 0 to atleast 100.

You should never encode above 200kbps, this is maximum, but 200kbps can be achieved with smooth playback if you lower the fps to 15, and increase the keyframeinterval from 0 to 50.

At the same time you should never go above a combined bitrate of 264kbps for both video and audio, with keyframeinterval 50 and 15fps playbackspeed. This means if you encode video at 200kbps then audio can only be 64kbps, if you want 96kbps audio you have to lower videobitrate to 168.

210kbps video with 96kbps audio and 25fps is a definate no go and will cut off audio during playback.

Firstly deside on a good encoder, suggestions are Nero Recode, Mpegable or Xvid/Vdub

heres a guide for Nero Recode

god this confusing... i am trying to find the settings that will give videos that may be short or long length that will have the best quality that i can get using my k750 but at the same time a very smooth playback with sound that does not jump or cut out etc...

what does anyone suggest.

i currently have a simpsons episode and these are its settings:

summery:
mp4
bitrate - 193

video:
frame rate - 25
size - 176x144

audio:
bitrate - 0
sample rate - 24000
channels - 2 (stereo)

now this plays with i think perfect play back, although the quality isn't amazing and can be a bit rubbish at times and the audio works though sometimes cuts up a little. quality is the main thing i want to sort out but what about sound too? how should i adjust the settings to sort this?

thanx.

I almost allways use Nero Recode and the settings in the guide I posted link to.
Gives optimum quality and allways fluent playback, I never have any problems at all. My highest recomendation to this sollution for mp4 creation.

Once in a while I use VirtualDub and Xvid, if I have some poor quality originals that need some filterering before encoding.

@choclate, Nero Recode comes in the package with Nero 7 - the latest version of Nero - you can download the trial version or buy the full version here http://www.nero.com/nero7/eng/index.html

@choclate

don't worry,

http://www.softpedia.com/get/[....]-Other-Tools/Nero-Recode.shtml

its just nero recode on its own and does not cost... its the full version of nero recode 2 and i'm using it now, it works perfectly.
