My w550i did that, there was a hiss before the track started to play - bit like going back to the old days of casette tapes, as a previous poster said! Not a particularly annoying habit, but it's certainly noticeable.

strange. would another firmware fix the problem or is it a hardware issue present in all w550s?

My W550i still had this problem after a firmware update - perhaps it will be addressed in the next update after that?
If not, then it could well be a hardware issue.

Came from O2 originally, so a tiny amount of branding but was factory unlocked. Only branding is the slight change of one icon, and a couple of wallpapers and screensavers.

About that hiss, I was very suprised when find how much different mp3's can sound depending of how they where compresed and in which quality they are

@sammy, could the branding be the 'cause of the hiss? try comparing with an unbranded w500.
@maki, i don't think mp3 compression could 'cause a hissing sound even before playback.

I get no hiss on mine. Its a generic model W550i (factory unbranded)
The rubber cover/plug is for connecting the phone to an external antenna from a carkit. The W550 has a mirror already attached next to the camera lens.
Here's one of my W550's

I didn't know W550 also has that hissing problem, which is also present on W800 (since I upgraded from R1L002 FW to R1NA005 and R1AA008). I didn't have that problem before with R1L002.
