It's because they still haven't started public beta testing yet. When they do, there's bound to be a load of 'enthusiastic amateurs' (that's the polite phrase for them!) trying to install it on 5 year old sheds with varying amounts of success.
The specs microsoft give at the moment are for the current beta releases. It's likely that the basic version (without aero) will run on more modest machines, certainly without a dedicated graphics card. Most people just potter down to PC World and buy the cheapest load of crap with on board everything that they can find, if Vista won't work on these types of machine then M$ would lose out big time.

i'm a heavy gamer, and a lot of what i do and how i update my computer, latest video/sound cards, processor, ram etc, kinda relies on windows... and most games need windows.
