@ psi , it could also mean that something on the side is touching the screen , a good sweep , where the screen touches the housing could also fix this problem

Thanks to those who responded to this topic. Unfortunately, upon disassembling the phone, there were no obvious problems, which leads me to believe the actual screen itself is at fault (as it's much more likely to have been unwittingly damaged than the MB, and if the MB was damaged it would be more likely I'd see other symptoms). Unless anyone has any better ideas, I'm going to have to buy a replacement screen, I think...
