I use BT 2 mbit. Until recently it was ok. Suddenly the speed (during office hours) was down to dial-up speeds. Anyway, after much research I found out that this is due to BT's contention ratio, and the recent addition of a new office just next door to me.

Contention ratio basically illustrates how many other people you share your connection with. The theory is that everyone is not online at the same time, therefore BT (and other companies) share the line between consumers. Therefore, you may have signed up for 2mbit speed, but if you share the connection with twenty other people, your speed could potentially be less than 100kb (and in reality much lower).

I have been speaking with BT practically every day for the past two weeks. They have yet to even acknowledge "contention ratio" when I speak to them.

The conversation has been going as follows: I call BT and tell them the problem. I ask them what my contention ratio is. At this point, they either refuse to discuss CR, or they tell me that I need to speak with "tech support". Then, a couple of days later I get a call from "Tech support" saying that they are happy that my problem has been resolved. Like f**k it has been resolved. This cycle actually repeated itself 3 times.

I have tried everything, but I can't get BT to acknowledge contention ratios. I know they are crooks, but I really hope more people learn this soon.

exactly right there is a lot more to a good broadband connection than just the advertised speeds. contention ratio is extremely inportant and many of the mainstream and cheap broadband provider give terrible contention ratios when you scratch the surface of their deals. also some of the down time from certain providers is terrible.

I recommend Demon - something like £19 for 2meg conection. Very good contention ratio and in 8 months i have never had any down time at all - apart from when bt managed to bugger the local exchange.

I am with pipex nearly 2 years now and i started on 512mb for £70 per quarter! (i decided to pay quarterly instead of monthly)

I got upgraded to 1meg and now i have been getting speeds equivalent for 2meg for around 6 months maybe more.

Very reliable indeed!

I wanted to go to 8meg and there is a guy from work who lives about 8 doors down the road who is with ntl on 8meg but i go online to ntl website and i can only get 2meg WTF?

Also if i went with bulldog can you choose just to have the broadband and not the phones as my grandad is with bt and he will not move!

I use Plus.net http://www.plus.net/residential/broadband/

Their packages start at £9.99 a month for up to 8mb (with PAYG data transfer rates 0.224p per MB) up to £21.99 a month with no fixed download limits.

They also give fairly generous web-space on their 14.99 and 21.99 packages.

we have f2s specialist ipconnect? 512k d/l speed is about 70kbps for 27.99 per month - its not on the website any more i dont think...and i know you can get better deals, but not the ratio thingy. there normal home broadband packages could go really slow...whenever. also the very cheap (e.g. tesco) broadband deals, are not sutible for p2p and gaming - they have some way of stopping it dunno how - anyone?
