i wonder if this phone will be fully compatible with FOMA's WCDMA network
even for web browsing hehehehe...definitely will not use web browsing in japan even i Need to do go since I know I will not be able to afford the pricing.

However it is nice if they do offer more WCDMA phone into japan market...because it mean SonyEricsson is converging with their Japan product....and we might one day have one design tht suit out and no need to admired thru picture about how cool the japan SE phone is....

Only Vodafone customers are able to roam in Japan at the moment.

Although, NttDocomo is going gsm, surprisingly enough!

oh well vodafone japan is doing badly.....it will be sold to softbank if i remember correctly.

ya...what I refer to is NTT DOCOMO....their 3G system is FOMA but it is basically a WCDMA system. so it just makes me curious whether K610 can work nicely under NTT FOMA network instead of thru Vodafone....

If not mistaken, for WCDMA coverage...NTT give better coverage since it is the biggest 3G operator there...or at least the one who is not losing.

Yup read about NTT Docomo will eventually migrate to GSM which is good news...it just show tht Japanese is willing to connect to the rest of the world in term of information technology...or like Motorola new slogan...seamless mobility.

Whereelse Korea....still want to stick to all their unique system which limited to CDMA user just seem unlogic.

"Japan is, of course, the home of 'higher tech' mobile.

Unlike many areas of the world, Japan chose not to go down the GSM route, preferring PDC and PHS as its first steps into 2G. Both are now likely to be short-lived as the country is rapidly shifting to 3G technologies outright and there is around 97 per cent 3G-coverage across the land.

Japan's operators split in their approach to 3G, with giant NTT DoCoMo preferring FOMA - a W-CDMA variant which UK 3G users won't be able to roam on; Softbank Mobile (previously known as Vodafone Japan) opting for W-CDMA - which UK users can roam on; and au (KDDI's network) choosing the CDMA path, with CDMA 1xEV-DO. No. The operators even use different standards so its one or the other. NTTDocomo are definitely intent on World domination.

That's not true. I-mode was first made available in EU by KPN Mobile.

Thanks for that.I never heard of it in Europe until O2 planned to launch it in the UK.

Feb 1999 was when Nttdocomo launched theirs.
