Sony and Ericsson combined their mobile telephone departments and created Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications. It is owned 50/50 by the two and employ around 2000 people I think.
So there are three companies.

All these features have been integrated into Japanese/South Korean handsets, and can be the only way for
to claw their way back into the game from fifth place.
However much it is wanted by people on this forum, a Phone/PDA (P800) combo is not going to do it.

Costs would be less if they use most of the same chips/screens as their CDMA phones in Japan? Am I right?
Look at where that plan has taken Samsung. From Nowhere to Third in 2 years.
Ericsson has said they want to see results from the JV in the Q4 and Q1 2003, and I don't think the P800 or T100 are it.
The specs I've outlined could be sold for less than the eventual cost of the P800, which I'm sure will appeal to less people than a normal handset would.

It would be less because, and only because, they get them from sony. The components themselves will probably not be cheaper just because they share them.
However, if you share platforms then savings are possible because then you can combine manufacturing processes and softwares. Eventually, I think that is part of the point with the joint venture.
Another point is combining the best of two worlds: putting Cool Sony Technology, like color screens, memory stick, digicams and PDA-ness into mobile telephones. We are seeing part of that in P800.
The problem is that developing new platforms is costly. Probably they would be trying to find a common ground and build something new from there. Software-wise I'm hoping they go for symbian/uiq.

What makes you so sure about that?
Maybe all the work is being put into optimizing the hardware-design of P800 and minimizing production costs - they moved the manufacturing from sweden to france (probably not the only factory but still.) Obviously alot is going on behind the curtains to minimize the costs.
I'll remind you that they recently released a new white-paper for P800 and it still has "preliminary" written everywhere in it. Yet you don't know anything about its price its final set of features.

Symbian is great for big screen smartphones, but what about normal handsets?

Why is it a hasty conclusion? Do a google search, or think back to Oct 2000. Where were Samsung? But with the advent of the A100, A300, T100, S100 et al in quick succession, they have become third best-selling manufacturer in the world. They are second in my market (UK).

This is just my opinion. P800 is not a mass market proposition, and will miss the christmas market. Outside of forums like this one, I just don't think the demand for products like P800 is very high. The biggest selling PDA/phone combo ever is the 9210, this sold 53,000 units in a quarter. Will the P800 sell more than this? I think
have wasted too much time on this handset, their top engineers neglecting high-end handsets in the process.

You're right, the P800 could be just held back to lower costs, that is very true. But the main point I was making was in respose to the guy that said that cost was a major factor.
I was trying to get across that the specs I outlined could come in under 700 euros, the expected price of the Samsung V200, which has most of the features in my
specifications.
Remember, this is all my opinion..
