I saw on tele that Studios are worried about how much of the profits 'big name" stars want for their services. For instance in MI3, Cruise got Actors fees + a percentage of the profits and merchandising AND as Producer he received those fees + another percentage of profits and merchandising.
This is not unusal in Hollywood and one of the reasons that movies such as Superman were released starring relative unknowns.
I suspect Tom wil have to settle for a lesser deal if he wants another Studio to pick him up. Speculation is he's trying to finance US$100 M to go it alone.

@car - Thanks! There were some rumors goin' around then that Tom is - barren
that's why during his stay with Nicole they just adopted some kiddos . . . I'm not sure if he has a child with Mimi Rogers though
