In most phones, it does seem that the limiting factor is rarely (if ever?) the lens. surely the CCD or whatever sensing devices they're using are the weak points, with a general lack of ability to pick out fine details, cope with low light or deal with high contrasts in images?

a lens is onething, to be honest nokia's CZ phone fails to impress me. its not really worth an extra penny.

If the K800i had the same CCD sensor as the S700i we would be declaring it the ultimate camera phone!

You may not like the idea of camera phones but it's a great move, think about it, if phones didn't start to have good camera's like 3.2 and 2 megapixels then camera company's would never of bothered to put higher megapixel's in there own compact camera's so soon.
All compact camera's will be 7 mp or more before long and phone camera's will be 5 mp.
Like it or not it seems to be where there heading.

Why would any normal person want or need a 7MP camera? Apart from the fact that everyone must have something that is percieved to be "better" than the one their mate just bought. More pixels doesn't mean better quality pictures.
As far as phone cams go, i'd MUCH rather have a higher quality 2MP camera in my next phone than have one with another megapixel or two that can't actually give good results.

The S700 CCD is 1.3MP, and while good, the 3.2MP of the K800 is just as good but with more MP's.

BTW, sony have started using CMOS in their cybershot range (starting with a 10MP jobbie). CMOS is fast becoming as good quality as CCD, but cheaper with less power consumption, so CCD will disappear in all but the most high end equipment (if it doesn't disappear altogether)

About Carl Zeiss lenses, the Sony Cybershot range nearly all have Carl Zeiss lenses, only a few have Sony made lenses.

The K750/K800 have Sony manufactured lenses.
