gotta agree whizzkid. INfact there will always be a market for dedicated players.

However I think I can see what this survey is revealing - peeps are taking up MP3 player phones, but NOT music downloading.

No surprise there. Once they download it to the phone they can't back it up, copy it or anything. Peeps aren't stupid - no one is going to buy music that costs them 1. to download in gprs charges, 2. in fees to the online music store, for something they can only listen to on the phone.

It's not going to happen. Jesus, I hardly know anyone who buys music online even, let alone with their phone. People want portability with their music. They want it on their computer and then to be able to create a cd and copy it to their phone/mp3player as well.

Personally I think the idea that people who like listening to music on the go won't be interested in phone based mp3 players is absurd. Apart from enthusiasts who like to take their whole music collection with them, (a minority of mp3player users) most people will find an mp3 player phone an ideal combination of two devices. WHY would anyone (other than enthusiasts) carry around two devices when they could have one? The whole arguement about better capacity of harddrive based players is mute unless you want thousands of songs on you at any one time. I have 250 odd Songs on my 512MB card (and 80MB free for photos), that's enough for me, and I'm pedantic about having my favourite music with me at all times.

I mean it's a simple equation. Most people will prefer to have as few gadgets as possible cluttering up their mobility.

The rest will still want their thousands of songs, and good luck to them, but most people will be happy with a phone based MP3 Player, and that's why the growing popularity. People are starting to realise that the phone based mp3players are no longer toys.

Holy cow! I. Din't know that music download services don't allow you to save the song! I'd rather listen to FM radio instead of downloading a 5 mb song, paying for gprs and pay the online store like max said.. I mean how do people think this is gonna take off. Although an optimist to the core, i can say online music downloads (in its current way of functioning) is not gonna take off! Btw does someone here think this is out of topic??

well I'm not sure about downloading to the phone, but if it's done using mobile based DRM (aka ringtones), then it's forward locked content (you can't copy it to another device).

i agree that soon dedicated music players will be left to music nerds only...the ones that moan about differences of sound quality that nobody elses notice, and the ones that really need 60 gb of music - i have a 2gb card and i never made it full of music, although i listen to it regularly and also to a bunch of podcasts

I would much prefer my 30gb iPod over a 2gb memory stick any day of the week. You must listen to the same songs over and over and over again? It is all about personal taste. Even if apple released an iphone i would still have an iPod with me aswell. No contest!

most songs at 320 luke yeah....

as much as i hate the ipod design as in have to use a god damn wheel to get from a - z.. which when you have 12000 songs on it.. takes the P a little.. i do hope the next ipod will have a better search system... but until that time my ipod is going no where..

as wifey said.. i like the choice of being able to listen to whatever music takes my fancy at the one time.. whereas on a 2gb stick you generally only get a selection of tunes.. not what us audiophiles enjoy...

not that im a huge fan of portable audio anyway.. i think the quality is pants but until i can lug about my amp, cd player and speakers.. i ll l have to stick to my ipod

ever heard of a PC...with a 300gb hd??? Why do i or anyone have to listen to the same music over and over when i can easily change the music i have in the ms pro duo??? Do you know how much music fits on even a 1gb stick???

like i said, there will be people resisting it, but the majority will leave the dedicated players getting dust, or won´t buy it

Yeah that is true but it is a pain in the arse having to change your music over all the time, do you not think? I like having all my music to my disposal.

you even tried filling a 2gb stick on a pc over and over again?

it gets boring and tedious as hell..

i'd rather connect my pod up once and be done with it...
