the west can survive without oil money from their own fields, but they can't survive without access to the middle east oil reserves. They need that oil, or they need an alternative power source.
They don't have an automatic right to the oil, infact, since the oil is running out I would think middle eastern countries would be fully entitled to restrict supply to force the price up; so they can hedge their economy against the time when oil runs out, fund enhanced extraction techniques, and as needed slow down demand for oil by keeping the price high to make what's left last as long as possible.
If anything, it is the west who need an alternative power source. The middle east have heaps of oil for their own needs. It is not an alternative power source that the middle east needs but alternative industries that can take their economies into a world that no longer relies on massive oil consumption.
