> P990i Vodafone (UK) firmware
Bookmark topic
I bought a P990 from mobileshop last week for £90 (£30 per month for 12 month O2 contract 250 mins+100 sms). I thought it was a good deal, given the other prices I had been looking at over the last few weeks.
Although I love the phone (once I had got used to the changes from the P910i) it is absolutely useless as it crashes and freezes all the time. I have had to take the battery out so many times to re-start it that it seems likely that the battery compartment lid will break before long if it goes on like this.)
I found, to my surprise, when I switched the phone on for the first time that it was vodafone branded. When I try to upgrade the software it tells me I have the latest version (Phone R5A006, BT R4F01, Org R3A04, CDA R2A04). Having read this thread it looks as if I've been sold a pup. I want to keep the P990 but should I insist on a non-Voda branded one? Will that be better?

jsheerin..i would personally demand a p990 with no branding whatsoever. They've been cheeky to sell you a voda branded one on an o2 contract.

@jsheerin: Thats wierd. You have what was meant to be a 'Vodafone' handset. The phone knows it is Vodafone hence the updates destined for 'vanilla' phones won't apply. They are network unlocked - mine is using my old O2 SIM until my number port is complete. Looks like the shop is up to something dodgy - I don't know how they have had a handset from Vodafone (who subsidise the cost against contract revenue) which they are able to sell on without a Voda contract. They probably bent the normal rules to guarantee a sale because of O2 handset unavailability.
Quite often O2 provide completely unbranded, vanilla phones which are better because you can update with the generic firmware from SE as soon as it comes out, no need to wait for the network to release a 'branded' version (the point of this thread
Other posts on this forum suggest that the O2 phones won't be available for a week or so. If I were you I'd phone up the shop ASAP (within 14 days you have more leverage, just in case they are difficult) and tell them you've received a Voda model by mistake. They may well tell you they don't have any O2 models in stock, but you should insist that they send you one when they do.
Phone them again a week later, or whenever posts on this forum indicate that O2 stock is out and about, to make sure they haven't forgotten to send your replacement. You won't be a high priority

Thanks for the advice guys. Email already sent to the shop asking for replacement. I agree that it's a bit cheeky selling a voda branded phone advertised as 02. Does the SEUS only work with "vanilla" phones?

ok so how can I unlock my phone from Voda ? Looked at a few searches and they seem to refer to a special USB cable I need to buy. There must be a simpler way - surely I just need a code to enter on the keyboard?? Any ideas please. Thanks

SEUS technically works with all handsets, it's just waiting for networks to approve the firmware that can be installed on your handset.

Order the code from Vodafone.

Well at least that sort of ties in with what I was told - that they have newer firmware but can't/won't distribute it through SEUS.
It took me so long to get hold of someone who even knew what firmware was, and SE don't publish release notes for their SEUS updates anyway, so I reckon there's zero chance of a Voda rep knowing what version they have or what is fixed in each update.
If they are to be believed and *do* have updated VF firmware (they've gone through an arduous process of adding their own startup/shutdown anims?), howcome they haven't put them on SEUS?
And howcome my phone which received last week has such old firmware - R7 was on SEUS near the start of Sept.

Well my 'brand new stock on Friday' phone arrived, and it looks exactly the same as the one I had - the same firmware versions as posted at the start of this thread.
Before restoring from my backup, I've had a little play with Opera whilst playing mp3s - so far no crash, its only been 15 mins use though.
I'll see how long it is before it decides to restart itself.
I'm wondering if they could have updated Opera without changing the firmware versions? Please see thread 'P990i Opera version' on this forum.
I've installed SwissManager (http://invitel.hu/zolea/cps/sm.htm) so I can keep an eye on free RAM - at the moment it says I have 1.3mb free, just with the standard menus, web, media player, connections manager and phone running.
Oh, whilst am typing this message - not touching the phone which is just playing mp3s with opera in the background - the free RAM dropped to
Oh, thats because Opera has closed itself. With no warning.
Oh well :-/
