how about a master reset on your phone? i think that would help!

I used to have that problem. I had to do 2 master resets due to other problems, and now it gets into file transfer mode right away. Not sure if the master reset helped, but everything works now. If you're interested why I had to do these master resets here is the post:

It will erase everything in your phone memory. So do a backup to the memory card then.

I think you are right. Firmware upgrade changes device ids and all that "I think". So I think after upgrade you should reinstall you fone as a device so that it get linked up nicely.
