I read somewhere that we as mankind are crossing a line after which natural resources will not be harvestable through primitive means anymore. This means if we ever fall back to pre-technology times, we will not be able to reach and mine enough minerals to push us further into the future.
And one day we will also reach the point that requires us to have developed the technology to leave for other planets, or stay anchored on our doomed Earth, waiting helplessly to go extinct...

The oil WILL run out soon, it's a finite resource and we're getting through it at quite a pace in the developed world, and with countries like China rapidly industrialising we'll be getting through it even quicker.
I can see in many of our lifetimes a time will come where we will all have to be careful how much energy we use, and I'm wondering if soon we will be fighting wars over resources, not terrorism
Whilst of course civilians on all sides are the ones that suffer...

We ought to start a new industrial revolution where the resources we use are sustainable. Our current revolution has created an unsustainable mess, and yet we continue to do it for money.

Everyone get Sonyericssonman - he's responsible for our current mess!
I think that's why we have no really viable alternative sources at the moment, the status quo is making far too much money out of draining the world's resources, renewable energy sources may be much better for the environment, long term prosperity and development, sustainability etc. but doesn't make much money!
