> Japan not impressed with the Apple iphone

This phone hasn't even left the starting blocks and already things aren't looking so good. Not that I'm surprised, it still has to contend with the upcoming tough competition in the form of new SE and Nokia devices. Welcome to the cut throat mobile phone arena iphone.

I always thought this was going to happen. Apple takes the idea that what most gadgets already do there in japan and use it to market.

Trouble for Apple is that the mobile phone market is much much more mature than the mp3 player market. They may not succeed with the iPhone like they did with the iPod. There are soooo many mobile phone makes out there, they can't just take on the likes of huge global manufacturers such as Sony Ericsson and Nokia with just 1 device whereas the competion release loads at once.

the japanees may not appreciate the specs but they should take heed form the ideas and usability put accross by apple, how many of their phones have a proximity sensor for the touch screen and howmany are desgned for finger use not stylus - the technology is not the iPhones strength its its inovations.

I think its too early right now to judge iphones impact in the international market. if it would not make it in japan, apple still has other european and other asian markets to consider. given their resources, this is essentially just an experiment for them.

what is there to be impressed about other than a cute interface and slick looks? it doesn't really do anything other devices can't already do, but doesn't do a lot of things other can. the touchscreen typing may look nice, but it just won't be half as good as real keys for writing a lot of SMS, let alone emails and documents.
sure it impresses the hell out of the US market. but US telecoms are several years behind most of the world. it will be mighty tough to convince a lot of REAL smartphone users to give up their 3rd party app capability and 3G to make the switch to a pretty GPRS/EDGE phone. but it sure will impress their hairdressers...

The argument that the iphone is not good because its not 3g is what the article is based on and its simply ignorant. If people had actually watched the iphone presentation they ´d have known that steve jobs said apple is going to produce 3g and up phones in the future. Apple is not thinking about 3g right now because its not important at the moment. The iphone was made initially to be tested in the american market, a market without 3g. Apple is not going to release a phone worldwide out of nothing without testing first. This first iphone is a test. The japanese and european market arent as much excited about the iphone as u.s. but apple is not worried about those markets right now. The iphone will hit europe and japan in 10 - 12 months and who knows what specs the iphone might have then? Apple might release a 3g version or more for those locations, perhaps even a new version of iphone since all apple´s products are upgraded every 6 months.
The iphone is not just pretty, apple corrected the touchscreen, its a technology that will probably also be used on computers, tablets and etc. Its a breakthrough and no company has the same technology today. Other phones might play mp3s, videos and have internet but no phone at the moment has an elaborated media player, OS and browser (desktop-class) like the ipod or play videos with such good quality, or have those sensors, os visual voicemail, or widgets and so on... lets remeber that this phone runs 'OS X', which means very rich software. Apple may produce other special apps for this phone or allow other companies to do it, perhaps even make another phone with business in mind. There are old rumours that more models of iphone will be made, perhaps even this year. Has anyone noticed that Jobs only showed 3 apps of all the 11 icons on iphone´s screen?
You guys are not seeing the big picture here. Apple reivented the phone because it reelaborated the way we interact with a phone. There may be other phones out there that have this or that function that the iphone doesnt have but this is something every nokia or

fanboy should admit. I own a w800 and im very keen on nokia but they have actually reinvented the thing.

Yeah, the iPhone is revolutionary in some aspects, but it certainly doesn't revolutionize in other areas.
The lack of 3G is not the only con. The camera looks to be a real shocker for its price (2MP, no AF, flash or lens cover) and the irreplaceable battery is pure moneymaking.
And whilst the interface is revolutionary, it certainly sacrifices a lot of things for the sake of being flashy.
Think about simple things like dialing a number or writing an SMS on a non tactile surface. There's a reason why 99% of phones have keypad for doing those things.
What about playing games? Not really an option with the lack of a dpad.
Will the interface be easy to use when you're on a crowded bus? Will you be able to keep that screen nice and shiny with all that sliding, pushing and twisting? What about when you're eating?
And then the battery life. No doubt it will continue the Apple tradition of being less than up to par. That huge screen has to get its energy from somewhere, and so does the graphically intensive UI.
What's the use of all the shiny apps if the phone can't stay on long enough to utilize them properly?
