patches enable us to do things that mobiles wont allow us to do. example: you cant start mediaplayer by pressing the play/pause button without having the handsfree plugged in, disable promtps when receiving files, etc, etc

Per definition, at least according to Ericsson / SonyEricsson tradition, a patch is a modification on machine code level of the software that is sent out and will become obsolete when the next version of the software is released. Therefore, I would say that the patch will be removed at a firmware upgrade. Since a patch is so tightly bound to certain addresses of the program code, they are also dependant of a certain firmware verdsion in order to function, and would cause more damage than gain if applied to the wrong software version.
