sound a bit pointless for me to turn off 3g in a umts fone...

as already mentioned, it has a higher battery drain as described in the SE battery performance data on the product pages
UMTS phones may be bought by people who use networks which don't support UMTS and have EDGE instead
its may also be that some people don't use 3g calling or data capabilities
etc etc
in general, settings are provided to give us the option to choose

to be honest masseur, i never ever noticed less batt performance if i used umts or 2g. tested really many fones in the past, same models on different networks and i got the feeling, that umts able fones "prefer" umts coverage. i dont really understand the statement of se ( the one u mentioned ), why should 3g take more power, if i use lets say only standard features like calls or browser...
ps: if u like fast data transfer, k8 is not the best chice, cos it has no edge support, so if no 3g coverage, its pretty slow after 3g speed to use gprs.

one of the main requirements in the final specs of umts was to retain as much compatibility with gsm as possible. however the power requirements of umts vs the narrowband of gsm have presented one of the biggest challenges to the technology bother due to the radio requirements of umts and also the processing requirements of the received data in the handset.
although we now have dual mode phones its important to remember that umts protocols/standards/technologies are different from GSM in many ways
i am not sure how scientific your tests have been but they would seem to defy everything I have read about the difficulties the umts has presented and also SE's own data which they would surely present in the best light possible rarther than givng such lower figures compared with non-3g operations

i used mainly nokia symbians, cos only those had gprs, edge and umts support. teted at home and when i was in austria ( i love nokia logs, cos everything is so detaled ) anyway, i counted usually calls and browsing time and at the end of the day, i had usually the same result. in austria the networks are far behind the hungarian ones, so i got there only gprs and umts ( umts coverage ca 10%, of course the geography plays with ). in hungary edge is almost everywhere, umts in bigger cities, but gprs is damn fast, so no problem to watch tv or listen to internet radio.so, according to thses enviroments ( wanted to describe short the support levels ), i had usually 4-4.5 hours internet and 2-2.5 hours talktime, doesnt matter if gprs, edge or umts coverage. have to mentioen, that i tested mainly 6680, n70, e50 ( all of them have the same batt ) but i have the same result with 6233, 3250 ( same battery )
all i wanna say is, that of course my experiences arent that scientical, but fact is fact, i didnt ever noticed less talktime etc when i was in 3g area or not. gave a try to nec, moto, se, nokia, samsung fones ( 3g supported ones ) was sually pleased with the results, of course depending on the model types. and i kill my fones literally, calls, sms, tv, radio, mp3, browsing

well that comes only for when you switch networks(GSM to GSM and 3g or vice versa) coz its searching for your preferd netw.jst for few sec....
