Wow. I can't believe you can't use drive mode on the k800 without disabling the phone itself. This is a big disappointment considering that this is possible on the k750i. You just plug the k750i in your pc and the memstick is automatically detected; you can't access the memstick on the phone during this process, but it's better than the phone being disabled altogether.
I see these types of quirks with different
phones, it's becoming a trend.
produces a revolutionary phone with almost all the newest technology available, but they overlook some basic improvements like better voice command functionality, alerts for missed calls and messages, and other basic features that, in my opinion, could have been very easily implemented. I mean, if you can seamlessly integrate a 3.2 MP cybershot digital camera with a mobile phone, then improving basic phone features will be a piece of cake. It's like
is sacrificing basic, but very good and convenient, phone features for high-tech add-ons like a media player, a digicam, etc. which should not be the case. I like the add-ons, yes -- but basic phone features should not be the price to pay. I don't remember discussions like these during the good ol' ericsson days because they focused on the phone itself. Now it's just a contest of who can cram the most non-phone features in a mobile phone. Ironically, the phone itself has been forgotten.
I still believe in the quality of

no no you're talking about something different..
k790 can be used as a removable device with built in drivers but the phone will be put into offline mass storage mode.
if you use pc mode you can still transfer data to the memory card but will need pc suite installed and the associated drivers
same as the k750i in pc mode i'm pretty sure.. it's been while so i can't remmeber the exact setup for the k750i

Nope, no pc mode on K750. When you plug K750 in, it set's up mass storage drive (with drivers installed of course) to the mem stick, and you can still connect My Phone Explorer, or us it as a gprs modem etc. You can do all that without the PC Suite (infact PC suite is completely unnecessary)
There is no switching between modes on the K750, you get both at once.
It's a shame the newer SE phones don't work this way, however most phones manufacturers now have a pc/data mode thing, not just SE.

I have used all three phones (K750i, V3i, K800i). I use Linux. I connect all three phones on my computer and they all appear as memory cards on the desktop.
In Windows, only the V3i can connect to the computer and appear as an additional drive out of the box.
The phone not being recognized as a drive without the need for drivers is actually issue with the operating system being used on your PC.

Yes and No. The fact is the K750 can't be plugged into a windows machine like any other mass storage compliant device. Despite the fact that Linux supports it out of the box, other mass storage compliant devices do work in windows without drivers. I've personally used well over 100 mp3 player and usb drives without any need to install drivers.
I think you might be wrong about the V3 being the only device that connects out of the box. K800, W850, Z610 etc, will be detected under windows as mass storage without drivers as long as file transfer mode is selected. (I've done this myself with Z610)
K750 won't of course, for it you require drivers to be loaded.

Windows displayed that there was a K800i. After that there displayed a dialog box asking me where the drivers can be located. I cancelled the process, and voila, I can't see an additional drive on the windows machine.
When my V3i was plugged in, Windows displayed that there was a USB mass storage device plugged in. Then a new window popped up with the contents of the microSD card installed on the phone.
Maybe your Z610 can finally connect without the drivers, AFAIK the Z610 is a later model compared to the K800i.

Fair enough, but the fact the Z610 works but not the K800 or K750, indicates that SE fixed something, because the version of windows hasn't changed. I agree Microsoft play stupid proprietary games (not as bad as apple imho), but the fact that ANY OTHER mass storage device works fine under windows, indicates that SE have not adequately considered the technical requirements of the major OS in the market (windows xp) with regard to their mass storage phones. This is a big fopar on SE's part, even if the phones mass storage does work fine on Linux.

We've just ordered a proper flash drive for the office... Before that I've had to use my K610i + provided USB cable (We use WinXP; any driver installation NOT allowed by our I.T. administrator):
1. Plug the cable to the PC USB port
2. Select "file transfer mode" on the K610i
3. Wait for the PC popup that looks for the phone driver, then ignore it by closing the popup box.
4. Wait for the PC popup that recognizes the phone memory card
5. If phone memory card doesn't appear in Windows Explorer, refresh.
6. If step 5 still doesn't produce the memory card in Windows Explorer, pull out the USB cable and insert again (preferably into another port, if the PC has 2 or more USB ports.
Sometimes I get lucky, sometimes I have to go through the steps several times, but in the end I connect the mem. card successfully even w/o installing the phone driver.

I found similar issues with file transfer mode.
Further investigations which i did, makes it seem like SE were trying to be too "clever" with their USB connection, and may confuse some computers.
The rest of this post is a little techy.
I did a few tests by going into Device Manager, and selecting view devices by connection.
Basically, the phone "appears" to Windows in one of 4 ways.
1) Sony Ericcsson Device 039 Driver (Phone Mode)
2) Pictbridge Camera (Pictbridge Mode)
3) Generic USB Compound Device (File Storage Mode)
4) SEMC USB Flash Device (Flash Mode)
Modes 1 and 3 are whats is called Compund Devices. A compound device is like an "internal" USB Hub (often implemented in software on the device), which allows various sub devices to connect. This arrangement is used by Wireless recievers for Cordless Keyboards and mice (where the mouse and keyboard are seperate devices connected to the compound device), and sometimes for printers which have Card Slots.
Mode 1 uses a proprietry compound device, whilst mode 3 uses a standard USB compound device (which XP has drivers for).
Mode 1, has the following devices connected to the Sony Ericcsson Device 039 Driver:
- Sony Ericcsson Device 039 USB Ethernet Emulation (WDM)
- Sony Ericcsson Device 039 USB Ethernet Emulation (NDIS 5)
- Sony Ericcsson Device 039 USB WMC Data Modem
- Sony Ericcsson Device 039 USB WMC Device Management (COM12)
- Sony Ericcsson Device 039 USB WMC Modem
- Sony Ericcsson Device 039 USB WMC OBEX Interface (COM11)
Mode 2, has the Pictbridge interface connected Directly.
Mode 3, has two USB Mass Storage Devices (one ofr phone, the other for memory stick) connected to the USB Compound device
Mode 4, has the SE Flash device connected directly.
When plugged into the USB (whilst switched on) the computer immedietly discorvers the Sony Ericcsson Device 039 device (detected as a SonyEricsson K800i), and a menu appears on the phone asking to select one of three USB modes (2 for earlier firmwares). If phone mode is selected, nothing further happens (the Sony Ericcsson Device 039 USB is already connected).
If Either pictbridge, or file transfer mode is selected the phone effectively "disconnects" from the USB and re-connects in either USB Composite, or Pictbridge mode.
For some reason this switch seems to be happening too quickly, for the computer, or something, but the comptuer is not detecting the switch from Sony Ericcsson Device 039 USB to generic composite mode, hence the drives do not appear.
If your wish to use the file transfer mode on the SE, the best way to do it is to turn off the phone, and then connect it to the USB, this will automatically switch on the phone, and switch directly to File Transfer mode.
Sony Ericsson needs to have a look at this, because its happend on three computers I have tested on (drives not appearing when connected in file mode)
Maybe a better solution is to onto switch into phone mode, only IF phone mode is selected.
