UMTS... that's it. What does that stand for? He was also talking about a data system called EDGE, but he didn't say much about it other than it's better than GPRS.

I just wanted to say that i have been an at&t wireless customer for over 5 years, and i loved your service, in april of 02, i bought a SE t68 phone and was very dissappointed at the service and amount of dropped calls and bad reception areas, I purchased a t68i in sept, and have seen some improvements in reception and dropped calls but they are very slow in updating "towers". When can i expect to get as good reception as when i was on my old nokia 6160 phone?

My GSM coverage supposedly covers as far down as the Northern Virginia area. I'll be down there for Thanksgiving, so I'll find out in about 2 weeks. I believe AT&T had GSM in DC / Northern VA shortly before Philly. I'll put up a post about my DC/NoVA reception later this month.

i seriously doubt AT&T being capable of covering the continental US. Their gsm service was barely introduced hence, it's gsm network is way too small to be expanded and to be given a humorous jan 1,2003 deadline. i dont even think that there will be any improvements on at&t, cingular and t-mobile. one main reason is: these service providers are concern about the sales 'for the holiday' and spending $$$ on advertisement rather than network expansion or improvement. regarding gprs, for at&t, it won't happen. the launch of gprs in united states which was introduced by cingular 6/2002 (i'll check on that) is not even close to being in it's full potential, how can a new gsm service provider be able to do it? how much will they spend? i hope you all know that cingular's GPRS is still running 9.6kb. u might think it's faster but it's NOT.
at&t would have to join / make agreements (aside from what it is right now) with another company. it wouldnt be successful on it's own.
to date, t-mobile is the only service provider that has true-MMS.

did you get to ask him about international SMSing? i migrated from TDMA to GSM so i could send text messages to my friends around the world only to find out that my messages were being lost in a black whole of SMS, even tho i recieved positive delivery notifications for these same SMSs.
any idea when international text messages will be unblocked?

GPRS is being used on the ATTWS network on a daily basis, and we are in the test phases for EDGE (Enhanced Data Rate for Global Evolution) to be deployed later on in 2003. The GSM footprint is still a lot weaker than our existing TDMA footprint, but you have to understand that we have built our TDMA network up over the last decade. WE have only had GSM service deployed for about 10-11 months now, and we have 27 of the 30 major metropolitan areas in the US covered as well as several other smaller cities. We were originally supposed to have MMS launched 3rd quarter 2002 but has been pushed back until further notice, but we want to make sure we have a quality product before we release MMS to the public. Unfortunately, there is no capability yet for SMS to an international subscriber, but we have roaming agreements in over 165 countries worldwide, not bad for a service that was born such a short time ago. Look for many upgrades to the network in the future, we are pouring money back into the network at an exponential rate to make our customer's experience more pleasing. Thank you to all of you who have toughed it out thru these past few months, and we hope to have many new advancements deployed throughout the next few years. Look for EDGE (114-144Kb) in the next 8-10 months.

this is typical, some ATT reps blowing smoke about how great their network is, then some others come on to say: I'm sorry but we're trying. I'd prefer if it was advertised as such. I had nothing but trouble with ATT GSM. Oh, yeah, and their flagship city of Chicago has lots, and lots of dead spots...some entire roads along Lake Michigan...not to mention poor building penetration. T-Mobile's GSM network in Chicago is far superior, but not as good as Cingular TDMA, Verizon and Primeco CDMA. I hope ATT goes bankrupt after Wireless local number portability comes to pass in a year...everybody will leave them with their panties in a wad...if we can ever get them to transfer numbers to new carriers...it took me ten days to get activated when I went GSM back in March, and the f*cking sales rep told me it would take less than ten minutes.
