I have to say I would be a bit disappointed if the networks chose to charge on a data quantity basis. I really don't want to be thinking how much data each MMS would cost - I would probably send fewer based on that.
A standard price 'per message' would be far more transparent and would more likely take off with much younger phone owners. I suspect the networks feel that they can sneak more money out of the unwitting consumer!! Aghhhhh - I'm getting cynical in my old age!

you are right to be a cynic, but are looking at the problem the wrong way round.
when t-mobile launched their £20/month tariff with 10 megs of data for mms, the price was dramatically cheaper than all the other networks who charge 30-40p a message.
they get away with it though because no one knows how much data they use in an mms, and because 40p chunks is a lot cheaper sounding than £20.
you'll never win.

I sent one MMS to my mate, and never used it again.
I did "draw" (more like a childish scrawl really) a picture and record my own sound clip with it... took A-G-E-S

I find the biggest problem is the time it takes to create a mms. Text messages are very quick and easy - mms needs treble the time and concentration.
Perhaps future software on newer phones may simplify things a bit.
