Actually I am pretty happy with the camera on the K800i.
Firstly, I need to point out, I am not a so called "Professional photographer", I take photos for fun. I find photography strangely relaxing, and artistic. A form of expression. I don't do it for profit.
Secondly, although I am interested in the technical aspects of a Camera, that is only a part of the equation, you can have the best camera in the world, but you need to capture those special moments.
See the picture below, I took this when I was in Sri Lanka. I took it on impulse while I was walking on the beach, and didn't really have time to focus and compose.
Although I took it with my Canon EOS 350D Camera, the picture "technically" is not a very good picture. It is a bit out of focus and exhibits a little glare. However, the content of the picture is pretty good. Many people have looked at it and simply said "wow". The bird looks like its kissing the sun. It captured an event that lasted a microsecond forever.
Sometimes this is exactly what photography is about, capturing the moment.
Now, despite the capabilities of the EOS, its not a camera I would be able to carry around all the time. And to be able to whip out a camera and take a picture of a moment is vital.
Like this picture below I took with my K800i (EXIF info is included, for those interested) whilst rushing to work the other day. I really didn't have time to compose and take the shot, and had to do some post processing, but I have a record of it.
In that sense, the K800i is perfect. Sure You cannot compare its camera to the EOS, but in my past, some of my best photos were not taken with the EOS.

No I meant a general sort of forum, which we can use for tips, such as filter settings, Photoshop settings, use of GIMP, etc. I certainly would love to contribute to that.

somethong like an "ESATO R&D"?
tht would be cool,i mean i have seen many talented users who created drivers etc. and i always thought why esato dont have a R&D!

Good post you have there on the K800i's camera module and s/w.
But then, there are also a lot of shortcomings of the camera that SE could have definitely fixed, but i think i know their reasons for doing so.
I'm just hoping the next installment of the Cyber-shot series (codename Sofia) will be more suitable for avid photographers.
