thanks for the suggestions etc but these tools seem to be data recovery after a reformat, rather than fixing the reduced capacity. I did also try the admin computer management but it also didn't see more than 120mb. I was hoping that would see a smaller partition had been created with more space to expand into.
everywhere shows 120mb, phone, windows XP, windows vista. its as though the physical characteristics of the card have been altered by the N95 format.
I did find a tool on the
SD cards association web site but that didn't offer anything useful
oh well... a lesson learned
i hope you dont think less of the N95 after this incident

no, of course not. it was always assumed that 2gb was currently the limit and I wasn't even able to do the full tests I wanted to do. for example my next test would have been a FAT32 format on pc. indeed I may get another to try that if no one else doesn't already try it first. The card I received was FAT16 and being 4gb probably meant it had that dodgy method that makes 4gb work on FAT16
I already have a couple of 2gb cards and that is fine by me. One for music, software, maps etc and the other for videos

Did you buy it from sandisk (the one that claim to be able to support N95)? Is it a SDHC card? If it is then we know N95 reader can read this type of SDHC card since it is able to detect the card (eventhough it did not report the right capacity). Were you able to save data to the card?
I dont know. Maybe there is a way to make microSDHC behaves like microSD and compatible for N95. Maybe some of these memory card makers know how to do that.
Anyway 2GB microSD card is very cheap now at 16euro (or 10pound). I just bought two. It is much cheaper than buying the newly released 4GB. And it is not much of problem to hot swap card in and out of N95. Even if N95 cannot support bigger capacity, it is no big deal. Anyway, the memory card is used mostly for data as all my programs are installed to main memory.

i've had this prob too masseur...
Its the readers on the pc and on the n95!!!
The N95 doesnt support above 2Gb so sometimes with anythin higher it will show a strange amount...
And on the PC side if ur reader is a slightly older one it may not read high capacity cards... I have two card readers which look the same but one will read 2Gb micro sd if its in its adapter but the other one wont read it as anything above 512mb!!!!

I am really surprised that the N95, a top of the range phone, does not support more than 2GB of memory. The, now, old P990i, supports 4GB cards.

@mib1800, no, this was a Kingston andhad no mention that it was SDHC
@voda_jon, the pc (both my vaio with windows vista and a dell with windows XP) had no trouble reading and writing to the card as I tested that first before trying in the phone. Both showed the correct capacity and were able to store close to 4gb.
it was only after I formatted in phone that both pc's could only see that the memory card was 120mb and nothing I have tried so far seems able to change that.
@jcwhite_uk, I guess the step between 2gb and 4gb SD is similar to the step from 128mb duo to 256mb+ pro duo, it just took SD alot longer to reach this technical step.
I've posted on my-symbian a week or two ago a bit of research I did into SDHC and there are many examples of manufacturers such as pentax providing firmware updates for SDHC compatibility on some of their camera models that date back to 2004 (
see here and
here for example). Also the SDHC driver can be taken out of the palm treo 680 and put into the 700 (
see here)
There are other examples of this suggesting that all the N95 needs is a firmware update.

i'm sure Nokia wont hold people back from getting the most from there flagship model, well at least i hope so!
with regards to your new 120Mb SD Micro, have you tried an active partition recovery tool?
