I'm not the one that was making the claim but according to Max Wedge SE and their implementation of Java is going to rival S60 and am sure Nokia must be quaking in it's boots NOT.

Dogmann, xls and doc viewer IS available in JAVA (I use it on my K800). Infact there is very little you can't do with JAVA at this point, about the only real disadvantage is the inability (as of current JAVA implementations) to integrate with the phone itself (example record phone conversations and answering machine apps etc) This is one area where dedicated OS's still best java. But advantages of smartphone are steadily disappearing as JAVA get's better and better.
Java can access contacts, tasks, calendar etc, as well as the phones multimedia, file system, connectivity (bluetooth, gprs).
tbh, I actually found more freeware java apps for my K800 than I could find good freeware apps for my N70.
The trouble with people who us s60, they are completely unaware of exactly what JAVA offers these days. Becuase you have a smartphone, you've never needed to explore the potential of java, but you insist on arguing with someone who actually does use java and has more than a cursory knowledge of it's ability.

AFAIK, Samsungs have a document viewer on their Java phones (D900 etc.)

you can also get mobilepdf. Zesium now have mobiledoc instead of View Doc (they aren't offering view doc for download anymore) and mobiledoc is also trialware.
There is a very long trial version (hint hint) of mobilepdf to be found at se-nse if you search.
