elder seems to be a very close person to sony ericsson, i remember reading an interview with a very senor person of sony ericsson by elder few years bak.

it seems elder also was suprised when he see's who is meeting him at a coffee shop. the meeting was arrange by a elder's contact in sony ericsson.

again elder seems to be given some authority to speak. as most of time he gets the products before hand the anouncemnet & sometimes provide a full review on the same day of anoucemnet..i think he did this with the review of p910..

Hopefully.

Its amazing how fast it is growing. 50% more units shipped in Q107 compared to Q106 and from what some have said the huge indian market is demanding more mid-tier handsets now, rather than the cheaper end phones.

This strategy works - if SE stays away from manufacturing bargain basement handsets then it will be the brand that people will aspire to owning and it will keep its ASP high enough to make good returns.

I would like hear what strategy SE has for tackling the American market, which is currently divided by cdma / gsm.

i must say, that focusing on low end models production is a tricky business. we all know, that a 50$ cellphone in emerging markets is an attractive offer. but the problem that this phone can have double effect on its company.

1) postivie: these models are cash sources. low cost, good demand because of low selling price. production quantities can be altered at any time, plus the possibility of outsourcing and ODM.

2) negative: its quality is mediocre. people can grow bad feelings about it which can create a look toward other brand (in a renewal case). the Nokia 1100 is a huge bestseller. but because of its cheap materials, people who used it, may possibly look toward another manufacturer when choosing another phone
(PS: they might grow brand loyalty, but either cases, it's a tricky issue)

1100 sold 120million copies, i dont think anyone had a problem with it. i agree with your first point but the second point makes no sense. Low end mobile will always be cheap, anyone diverting from it will go to another low end mobile and it be will cheap aswell.
