it is a blind spot in your eye that you dont see in evryday life that causes this

As it gives you a fixed point to look at, same areas of your retina are subject to the same purple colour, which after a while looses sensitivity against that specific colour and looses track of the dots.

On a bright day, look at a fixed point on a white car or something for ten seconds or so, then close your eyes, you will see the car and its surroundings for some time. Your retina is over-exposed and will keep sending the same data to your brain for a while. Or something like that..

Its called the fading lilac illusion. search on wikipedia for it and you should find a very nice explanation. Also there's a link somewhere on there to a flash version where you can see the effect of the color of the dots and of the background on the illusion. Would have posted the link if i wasnt on the phone right now
