The maximum memorry is 200 messages, atleast its so on mines, the k800 happens to be 1000, dont know why that has so much.

I don't think that the SMS memory is shared with the rest of the phone's internal memory. Even when i have an absolutely full phone (W810i) my message folders still fit 200 texts.
An SMS is fairly small compared to most other stuff in the phone memory, for example pictures etc. I can't imagine a 160 character SMS, plus headers etc, being over 500 bytes in size, so 200 of these would only be 100kB, in a totally full inbox and outbox.
