I have never used/considered Motorola phone though they have fairly good looking phones.

I had read a review of Moto's recent phones which was criticizing Motorola sticking to few designs though quite new features are added in these models. Also the marketing muscle lacks.

Reading news of so many lay off Motorola seems in really big trouble. If you don't listen to the consumers then you will fail.

As a SE fan I hope SE will learn a good lesson not only from P990i fiasco but also from troubles faced by its competitors.

Lagging? Have you seen the new V9 RAZR? Their new interface looks amazing. On top of that the Z8 is a phenomenal device in its own right. I've always admired Motorolla for making innovative phones, and they have learnt from their mistakes aswell, something SE and others need to do.

Heres a press release I recieved yesterday.

San Francisco - Motorola chief executive Ed Zander's job may be in danger after cellphone sales disappointed investors for the third time this year.

The stock dropped as much as 4 percent yesterday from the US close on Wednesday.

Zander said the world's second-biggest maker of mobile phones had a loss last quarter.

Second-quarter sales fell to between $8.6 billion (R60 billion) and $8.7 billion. He predicted $9.4 billion on April 18.

"In this game, if you fall behind, it's hard to come back," commented Matthew Kelmon, a fund manager at Kelmoore Investment, which owns more than 110 000 Motorola shares. "They need a fresh start."

Zander has failed to repeat the success of Motorola's best-selling Razr phone, released in 2004. That has made it difficult to compete with devices from Nokia, Samsung and newcomer Apple.

The Razr2, scheduled to go on sale this month, probably would not earn the same profit margins as other advanced phones, said Lawrence Harris, an analyst at Oppenheimer & Company.

Harris, ranked among the most accurate telecommunications equipment analysts by StarMine, estimated that the Razr2 would sell for about a third the price of the most expensive Apple iPhone.

"A lot of investors feel Ed Zander may want to consider getting out of Motorola and bringing in new blood," said Pablo Perez-Fernandez, an analyst with Global Crown Capita.

"He's done a poor job getting the company through successors to the Razr and hasn't articulated a strategy for how the company can regain its lustre, other than cutting costs."

Before yesterday, the stock had lost 13 percent this year.

"People were expecting a bad quarter and got worse than they were even looking for," said Mark McKechnie, an analyst at American Technology Research who worked at Motorola in the late 1980s. He has a neutral rating on the stock and does not own any.

The results fit a pattern for Motorola, so the fault might not be Zander's, he said. "They like to put up a hot product every five years or so, then go back to the drawing board. To paint it all on the [chief executive] is probably a little excessive."

Motorola invented the cellphone and once dominated the business. It fell to a distant second behind Nokia while led by Chris Galvin, the grandson of Motorola's founder.

Zander replaced Galvin in January 2004 and oversaw a rebound in sales and earnings, spurred by the Razr.

Motorola reported its first loss in almost three years in the first quarter after Nokia and Samsung won market share with new devices.

Motorola's share slid to 18 percent, while Nokia's widened to 36.2 percent, according to research firm Strategy Analytics. - Bloomberg

Z8 = Only good Moto ever released. The camera, UI and sound (not to mention design) are a joke!

@Alexandra

Why do you say that? whilst i will admit i am no fan of it's black plastic construction and looks by all accounts it is a good Multimedia device sound and vision being it's strong points.

Having just seen a small review of the Motorola RAZR 2 V9 i must say i am very impressed at both the materials used in it's construction and the fact it has a 500mhz processor and a 2 inch screen. It looks like a premium product and should perform as one also, on the Multimedia side it has touch sensitive with tactile feedback Multimedia keys on the outside screen and is obviously focused on it's multimedia abilities i am pretty sure this is going to be a successful product for Motorola as it is a couple of mm's thinner than the original with a higher quality finish whilst packing plenty of power including HSDPA. IMO defiantly one to watch for.

when will we see motorola with UIQ touchscreens? i guess the UIQ non-touchscreen is meant for Motorola, and UIQ touchscreen is for SE

anyway i like the ROKR E6!

@razec,

Well actually Motorola are rumoured to have 5-6 UIQ devices being worked on and seeing as they are also starting to use touch sensitive keys with tactile feedback i would be surprised if there wasn't a touch screen UIQ device on the way from Moto in fact i would say it's a safe bet there is at least one.

It does appear that the iPhone effect is already having an impact as the technology for Touchscreens has improved especially with various feedback techs and the power in our devices has also increased greatly improving speed of response times we can expect to see plenty more touchscreen devices appearing. Even Nokia are working on touchscreen devices for early next Year.

Motorola also have an Aeon type concept in the pipeline, codenamed Elba, the Lower touchsensitive keypad changes according to application, eg: keypad for phone mode, play pause etc.. for music, its running on Linux-Java V7.1 but with a 2Mpx Fixed focus cam. Then they've got Cadillac a Kodal 5Mpx cam phone(rumoured, although they have tied up with Kodak which is a fact, do a search on the net and you can find the article in several mobile news sites dated May '07), they got a KRZR type phone with the P2K OS and Chameleon interface with a 3.2Mpx camera and 3G with HSDPA.
