why are you looking at FCC website, our tax money at work, lol. So will we ever have quadra(4)-band phones.... Only in America one messed up frequency wasnt enough so we need one more

Actually the original band was 900...then in Europe they ran out of Frequencies, so they had to create the 1800. In the US, the 900 and 1800 frequencies were already gone, so they created 1900. The problem with 1900 is that it does not penetrate buildings very well, and its also starting to get crowded in metropolitan areas. 850 also allows fewer towers that are more dispersed, so it becomes cheaper to cover more area.

And to all wondering about GSM 850, one thing to remember is that the 850 band allows current licensees of the 800MHz AMPS to reuse their license. Great for AT&T Wireless and Cingular who have only recently converted to GPRS and all they need is to change the hardware on current towers instead of building new ones.

1900 really sucks bad on penetration through buildings. My service is cut in half or worse usually.
