just checked on gizmodo and hackintosh, they both say that no solution is there yet.
Trying to unlock it or upgrading from an unlocked version results in NO SIM working. Not even AT&T sims.

So I still say stay away from 1.1.1 for now.

people may be able to force apple or o2 to unlock the iphone, but its apple/o2 that would set the price for the unlock and i highly doubt it will be under £30 the unlock price i would put it over £100 probably to get it unlocked since its the network who will decide how much they will charge if they are having to unlock the handset. not worth the hassle, that why i am staying clear off the iphone and looking forward to the nokia n95 8 gig

Just read on the BBC news site that updating an unlocked iPhone to 1.1.1 leaves the phone 'permanently inoperable':

Apple iPhone warning proves to be true

"Some owners are reporting on technology blogs and Apple's own forums that the update is deleting contacts information, as well as photos and music, on iPhones that have not been modified in any way."
