Kevin Mitnick, one of the most famous hackers of all time, achieved most of his hacks through social engineering (the term used to describe tricking people into giving away info or allowing access). For example he would ring a company and pretend to be an employee who had forgotten his password, and by being very convincing would get the password and then hack in freely.
