i think competition will pressure

to include 3.5mm jack in tgheir

phones. These

phones are WALKMAN, and therefore should be music centric.

it's no conspiracy. Very few phone oem's produce 3.5mm sockets for audio. You'll notice that 2.5mm sockets are more common than 3.5mm. This is because a 3.5mm socket takes up a massive amount of space inside a phone that's already packed with gadgets.
It's just a space and cost saving measure. The exact same reason smaller and smaller memory cards are being brought out. Anyone who believes it's a conspiracy by oem's to make you buy more, try and imagine a phone with a compact flash memory socket. Or even try and explain a walkman cassette player with the original 1/4in headphone socket!
As devices get smaller, so to fo the accessories, it's only natural evolution.

could it be anything to do with the handsfree not working and only headphones working with a 3.5mm jack?

isnt the answer obvious? if not see below.
(cos SE want to sell you their proprietary headset at $30 a pop but cost 50cents to make)

Ah the stupid fastport. My W800i went thru a lot of fastport replacements because after just a few weeks, accessories are barely recognized when being connected to my phone thru that fastport.

I never had a problem with fast port, although it's necessary to keep it clean often.
SE gain nothing by not using 3.5mm other than the ability to cram more good stuff into their phones. Only a very small percentage of users will actually buy a hpm-70 (or similar). Most fastport to 3.5mm cable users will have got the cable with their phone, not purchased as a separate accessory. Also, 3.5 mm jacks are notoriously prone to breakage if not treated with respect, this is another factor in the reason very few OEM's use standard 3.5mm sockets.
But it's the size factor that is really telling. For example there are more phones with 2.5mm plugs than 3.5mm. 2.5mm is no better than fastport, it still requires an adapter. This says to me that OEM's don't like 3.5mm because it takes up too much room and makes it more difficult to keep handsets lean and mean.
I'm not denying that 3.5mm is very handy to have on a phone, but I'm realistic about it. I certainly don't believe SE are trying to swindle anyone into buying an accessory.

I agree with pijlka. You can still use whatever headset you prefer. The fastport allows for in-line mic as well as 3.5mm jack. I find it very convenient to be able to receive/make calls w/o having to remove my headphones while listening to music. IMO it is done for all the reasons listed, except for the one stating its to make you buy SE. The fastport/in-line mic/3.5mm jack is bundled with the phone, allowing you to use whatever headphones you like.
