That just means Sony is better at getting rid of the stuff or uses better materials, etc. - stuff that isn't bad for the environment.

@QVGA

I depends on how easy it is to dispose of the materials when they're no longer needed and what percentage of that waste can be recycled safely and without harming the environment.

When you consider how many phones will be sold this year - what is it - just over One Billion?

If every one of those phones weighed 100g then thats roughly One hundred thousand tonnes of waste to deal with - some toxic.

MS produce a lot more than just games consoles. They manufacture a bucket load of accessories for PC's, games (all in pvc cases probably), and other stuff.

Likewise with Apple: computers, accessories, ipods, iphone etc etc.

And as goldenface says it's not about how much a company produces, but how harmful the chemicals are that they use in production.

Get this statement from Greenpeace:

The disassembling also revealed the iPhone's battery was, unusually, glued and soldered in to the handset. This hinders battery replacement and makes separation for recycling, or appropriate disposal, more difficult, and therefore adds to the burden of electronic waste.

It's always been the Apple way to solder their batteries in to ipod, of course iphone will be no different

You forgot the zunes, and their new TS based PCs

@max_wedge:

as you said, the facilities they used to produce them - that's what makes them more hazardous. Sony on the other hand produces most of their electronics on japan - which i believe to be lesser in toxicity than others i dont know about SE, but green peace isn't unreliable imho

the major reason why top this list now, is because have begin to get rid of ALL danger PVC and flame secured materia, etc, in their phones.....

Nokia is now on 9 place, because of their bad recycling-program and bad recycling information. Greenpeace found that out after some random samples, special in countries like Thailand, Filippinerna, Argentina, Russia och India.

keep up the good job ...(think its realy good to have this kind of thoughts about the environment...we should all have that)

Who cares which company is greener i dont. Its impact is minimal at the end of the day if China India and America dont change their ways with pollution whatever we do will make little difference. I for one dont worry about global warming we cant change what we have already done. Whatever SonyEricsson do will make no difference. Sorry.

i realy care..maybe sounds silly for some people. but i have allways thought the environment is very important...should be nice if my daughters daughter could breathe clean air and drink clean water and have ordinary cold winters & warm summers......

so for me is the atlantic ice-issue, greenhouse effect, etc.... very very important....
