Hi all,
Well from my understanding the Canadians have some of highest Data charges around they make 02 and Voda's offers look positively amazeing. Even so that is one heck of a bill.

Absolutely. It's very, very wrong indeed
But sadly it appears to be the trend these days. Internet service providers, PC retailers, landline providers, budget airlines... Everything seems to end up costing more than they advertise these days
I agree. However, I think the example of the networks is significantly worse than the one's you highlight. The internet service providers imply you will get a faster connection ('up to 8gb'); the airlines charge for all kinds of extras etc...
But the networks are telling a downright lie - Unlimited data actually equals Limited data.
Really annoys me... my business wouldn't stand a chance if I treated my clients like this.... Ok, rant over.

I can never understand how something can be advertised to be unlimited yet have fine print stating the limits. It's contradicting for sure and telcos shouldn't be allowed to get away with it. Besides, shouldn't there be a cap on the maximum charges for data usage?

Not in so many words. He upgraded his phone and took out a new contract but did not read the small print, like many of us...

I'll explain a few things....
"Unlimited" is a term used by mobile networks to get people on board, they are "unlimited" to a certain extent, there will be a fair use policy, take Orange's "unlimited" text offer on Dolphin 35, there is a limit of 10,000 texts a month, the logic behind this being that anymore than that and some other instrument is being used, such as a PC, and therefore the mobile isn't doing what it was designed to do, 10,000 messages by the way is 13 an hour, 24 hours a day for the whole month, Which is why the Canadian network offer "unlimited" browsing via the phone, the phone by itself won't download numerous GBs of data. While I agree that they shouldn't be advertised as "unlimited" if they are not, if they were to be unlimited, you would get certain clowns that would take the preverbal pi$$, such as using your mobile as a modem to connect to the internet then proceed to download god knows how much data, as I said, the unlimited SMS, it's fairly easy to set up a PC to use your mobile as a gateway, post in online et voila you have the chance to send millions of messages a month.
networks unfortunately have to cover their arses and offering "unlimited" things that have a limit is one way of doing it..
It's all about wording though.. While at Orange I never sold Dolphin with unlimited texts, I sold it with 10,000 texts...
There are ways and means around everything.
