I already know about remote unlocking since i've also upgraded the firmware on my phone with those kind of services, although it was some guy in america since he could offer the logs at half the price of most uk places. I was just curious about the email method but i guess its not too dissimilar.

There is a program, it reads needed data from ur phone and calculates proper code (as far as i remember it's even called "Ericsson reader"- looked very professional, it was placed in the e-shop next to ericsson flash kit with emma smart card reader) BUT , where i've seen it, costed about 300 euros (!!!)
BTW there are loads of programs like that free on the net, but only supporting old models

The first way of unlocking my phone is free? Do I just need to send the IMEI number to them?

About the cost - someone had to spend a lot of and time in figuring out how to unlock new model of phone. And these don't do it for free. General rule is that unlocking new models costs more. After some time, you can find some soft for free on internet, but you can't be sure if won't mess up your phone. If are going to be unlocker, you better buy HW unlocker for some 100-300 euro and you are sure you won't mess up anything...

Before few year it was no problem to unlock a phone. For a lot of models there were programs that calculated NCK for IMEI (and other data). But today it's more complicated - manufacturers are trying to avoid this type of unlocking and they are making it harder - but not impossible. It just takes more time to \"crack\" it... and also costs more money. It very unlikely that you will be able to unlock any new phone without cable.
