J Series and low end K and Z Series

SE entered the low end phones(in India) at the wrong time.Previously, for people who buy a low end colour screen phone, the basics were colour screen,radio..and maybe a vga camera.People liked new colour wallpapers and nice ringtones etc. When SE entered the new low end phone, nokia had changed the definition of low end which now became vga-2mpx cam(non autofocus),bit larger screen, radio, few mp3s(sd cards are cheap compared to MS).Also,if the price is bit above, they know that the nokia price will come down in couple of months as compared to SE where price reductions are few.Add to that poor marketing for the phones. No wonder it bombed big time. What SE needed was K750 and W800 at cheaper prices to attract nokia users.Anything below this model(SE are bad at and use poor quality), people trust and swear by nokia's superiority.

Dude in the above para the only thing I can agree on is "poor marketing" and "bombed big time"... That's it...

- SE J230 is better than Nokia 6030 (almost same price, used and owned both)...
- SE K310/K320 (FM was only downside) are better than Nokia 6070, 5070 and 6080 (almost same price, just look at the specs, used and owned K310)...
- SE T250, it's one of the unique phones in it's price range with metal finish and seems to for people who want a good quality simple phone not looking for features... Does Nokia have one yet at this price???
- SE K510 (cheaper than Nokia's cheapest 1.3MP camera phone by almost 1k, used K510)...
- SE W200/Nokia 5200, W200 is cheaper, comes with bass reflex headphone (or better headphones), 5200 has bluetooth... Recently, I got a mail from SE that W200 now comes in more color with some addition stuff with different colors... Like 512MB card with the blue one or portable stereo speakers with the grey one, etc...
- SE Z530, same price and similar features as W200 but also has bluetooth (Great value for money)...
- SE Z550/ Nokia 3110, Z550 is cheaper and has a better display resolution and size (Even better value for money, used Z550)...

- Nokia 5300 (Similar features as Z550 but a lot more costly)...
- SE K750/ Nokia 6233 (similar price, similar features, used and owned K750), 6233 having stereo speakers, better display and some updated spec, K750, we all know how great this old phone has been, still has a great 2MP camera with auto focus and strong flash... Does Nokia have one at this price???
- SE K550/ Nokia 6300 (similar price, similar features, used both and owned K550), 6300 has a better display, slimmer and metal body (in other words much better build quality than K550) but also a really really poor crap battery life and just doesn't have anything in it's 2MP camera... Whereas K550 also has a good enough display, takes excellent and speedy shots in daylight, auto focus + macro, has better camera UI and more camera features and it's battery life just blows 6300 away...
- Overall all SE phones have better battery life than Nokia...

Above these phones Nokia manages to match SE's phones and after W580 Nokia's phones seems to be more value for money than SE's...

I missed two old symbian Nokia phones between Z550 and K750 but SE only had W300 which was not comparable...

Sorry guys, Nokia might have better phones at the entry, mid and high range, but in the low range SE currently has better phones somehow...

And I also got P990 more than a year back for 36k, still love it but I feel angry and sad that I paid so much and now it only costs 1/3 than that price...

I doubt SE can match upto Nokia in 2008 or even Samsung and LG in some cases... May be in 2009... Here's hoping for the best...

As regards to the quality angle, in the summer I bought 2 sim free handset's a SE T650 for myself and a Nokia 6300 for my wife. The T650 cost double what the Nokia was, - the good news it has a much better camera and the battery life was superior. The bad news the Nokia was much better built, had a far superior screen (the best I've seen), and this is on a phone you can now get for under £60. I returned the T650 and went down the sorry route of the K850i (6 I think in total). At the moment I'm using a SE W880i which is fine, operates well and is reliable and well made. I like SE products and think they offer the best UI but some of there "Flagship" handsets have let them down.

I hope so too. But it all pivots on Bella and Maria's success in my own opinion.

I personally think 2008 will be make or break for

I really do hope it's make for them, they have produced some of the best looking phones that have ever been released. And it would be a big shame if weren't in the top 4 phone manafacturers.

To be honest I think SE will come back this year!
Why? Because they have even said their selves that they are backing out of the low end market so this will mean less crap phones and high end phones like the ones we all remember! Design wise...... dont really care aslong as is it attractive and simple for the GP to use.
Will the P5 bring SE back to their former glory? who knows only time will tell! And i hope they kick Nokias ass!

I agree @aqualung, However I think SE now needs new management altogether in all departments.

They need to think more on plastic quality, functions and userablitly,

I miss my K810 and K800. Never had any problems with them or a replacement.

So far ive had 5 K850i and ive lost my faith in SE products.

Hmmm . . . nice to see 'die-hard' se fans waking up to the reality of 2008 cell market.

@darknoob,there is CES in few days, and SE is participating...when they are putting their money for this big show, why not show couple of new models??And then keep some other phones for 3GSM??

@Peterkay,we all saw a lot of 'i have seen the future ' from you in the past year...but so far they were disappointing.Does the 2008 line up have anything exciting, anything other manufacturers have not yet marketed?Anything that will surprise us and the competition??

@hgautam,agree that SE may have good low end phones, but when people upgrade from entry level, they get impressed by their entry nokias, their friends and relatives advice them for nokias, the salesman pushes for nokia(more margin)...and now its Shah rukh khan, the new brand ambassador of nokia,India. For any crap to sell, aggressive marketing is needed and SE is poor at any marketing.

The line up is looking good

Keep the faith dudes.

Probably toward the mid to end 2008? The 5 models going to be announced here are mid to low end. Not really exciting

dr_thug, you've started a good thread with many valid points.

Aside from the "good product line-up" PerKay is slyly hinting at, SE need to do a few more things.

They need to put a lot of effort into quality control on both hardware and software fronts. Products with great specs that are shoddily implemented are worse than no product at all.

They need to make more of an effort at expanding their online presence - stop being so coy with the online communities and interact more directly with them. Online is where it's at, guys !

Customer and after sales service also really needs to be improved.

So, a "good product line-up" is really only half the work done.
