i think this is your problem: (i'm using k750i so bear with me...)
go to menu > settings > general and scroll to "new events"
change it from "popup" to "activity menu"

Yeah, what paul101 suggested makes it so that when you receive a new text message, it shows it in your activity menu events (if you select "activity menu"), whereas if you select "pop up", an individual "text message received..." notification is shown when you receive a new text.

While I'm not too bothered by this issue, I must say that it would be pretty useful to be able to view the next/previous message using the right/left key, since currently these two keys do not have any functions when you're viewing messages.
