After having used an HTC, an SE, and a Nokia, I've drawn this uninformed, unprofessional conclusion:

On a 2.8" QVGA screen with 65K colors (the HTC), the screen looks bad. Bad color, bad resolution, large screen.

On the SE...2" QVGA screen, 262K colors, the screen looks great. "Bad" resolution, but the physical size and color make it look good.

On the Nokia...2.6" QVGA screen with 16 million colors. Largish screen, "bad" resolution, but the colors make up for it.

On the new X1...3" screen and only 65K colors...but 800x480 pixels. The lack of colors is offset by the density of the screen.

So, in my own roundabout way, I think the amount of colors a screen has can be offset by the pixel density and the size of the screen. But we'll have to wait and see.

i have been in contact with a 6300 and the screen is honestly and noticably better than the normal non-16mil colored phones...

I have downloaded the same pictures on my old 6300 and on my K800i and the pictures on the 6300 were far more colourful and much brighter. And as for battery life well perhaps the other phone manufactuers have something to learn from Panasonic. I used to have a Panasonic phone with 16m colours and the battery life was amazing lasted days and days. I know and have noticed and seen the difference so thats all i have to say.

@Seanyb2
I don't think you've seen it all.
Don't compare K800 to 6300. K800's display is pale.
You have to compare 6300 with S500/W580 then. S500 is far more superb. It wins easily over 6300. Say wise, compare Nokia's best with SE's best.

K800 is last year's screen technology and SE doesn't upgrade the screen with the new one after a year. In the contrary, although 6300 has been released for over a year, the screen is being upgraded by Nokia. So the newest 6300 has more brilliant screen than when it was first released.

BTW.. I used Panasonic VS2 and VS6 too. But the screen wasn't that brilliant. It was kinda pale.

Anyway.. the only advantage that 16M color screen has is the color shading. When you have a picture with lots of color shading/gradation (e.g. the gradation of the blue sky), the 16M screen will display it better than 262k color screen.

But of course, you can trick this. Filter the image with some color depth dithering software.

The only phone 16m phone I've ever used is the Nokia 6300 and the images looked so much more...vivid than on my K790. I think the K790 has a brilliant screen, but the 6300 is much better in terms of colour and clarity.
