Yes it absolutely works, this is what happens
1. Purchase an iPhone from official source, either, Apple Store / online, O2 retail /online, or carphonewarehouse retail/online.
2. Pay them the money.
3. Go home, open, find a site that deals with iPhone (lots of them,
www.hackintosh.com,
www.hackthatphone.com,
www.i-clarified.com etc etc)
4. read it all carefully, and follow the instructions.
The things you need to do are the following;
Activate : This is telling the iPhone it's ready to be used, all iPhone are delivered in a deactivated state.
Jailbreak : This is the method use to access the file system on the iPhone to allow some 3rd party code to be run to allow any sim to work, remember the iPhone runs on a Unix based code of slimmed down Mac OSX, it has an almost identical file system to a Mac computer
Unlock : this i running a small code script, which tells the baseband (the phone signal part of the software) to allow any sim and network.
There are some extreamlely good and easy to use FREE answers about now, that are 1 click to complete solutions, google for
iLiberty
or
Pwnage Tool
Both of these will answer all your issues.
Works for both 8 and 16 gig models, and all world examples

Heres a good tip a well, before doing anything to your new iPhone
If you have a friend that has an officially activated iPhone, and you are interested in keeping your warrenty, do the following;
Remove the sim from your friends iPhone, and put it into your new iPhone, connect to iTunes and click activate.
Your new iPhone will start to work, as if it is your friends.
Now disconnet, and remove friends sim card, and put it back into his phone. His will resume working as before.
Now connect your iPhone to iTunes, and click the restore button. This returns the iPhone to the 'out the box' state.
now go about unlocking it as the previous post states.
The advantage of this is, that the iphone gets registered on apple and o2's database as being officially activated, and if you ever have a warrenty issue, they will see its officially registered and will accept it for warrenty, just remember to restore it via iTunes before handing it in!!

So.. you're saying I could buy one for £169 now and that's all I'd have to pay? What if I want to connect it to Itunes after the activating and unlocking etc.

That exactly I also wanted to ask.
Generally to make is easier for everyone:
Can i buy the phone for 169 pounds, unlock it and use it with iTunes without being in danger of paying any contract etc?
Thank you

Interesting topic. I'm not sure this is true though.
Go to the apple store, to buy the iphone do you not have to supply your details for your O2 contract? Do they not activate your account then?
Has anyone gone and bought a iphone through this method and just not registered it with O2 and unlocked it and not started the contract?
Thanks for any replies.

yes, I did it on Friday from cpw. they ask your details but its just for the receipt. I paid the £169 brought the iphone home and used ziphone to jailbreak and unlock and that all there is to it. Its the same if you buy from o2 or the apple store
