GDFS: This is the phones "stash", where all settings and calibration data is stored (this also goes for the firmwares IMEI-resource as well as the SIMlocks). Similar to other brands use of NVRAM (Non-Viotile Random Access Memory).

i translated from a spanish definition:
the gdfs is the responsable of the mobile calibration, storing the IMEI, network and battery performance, network locks, CDA configuration, model phone and all the data for its good performance. it is also responsable of the alarms, calendar, profiles, tasks, notes, contacts, images, used sounds, etc.
the gdfs is unique for every phone and cant be copied from one phone to another without the tools and appropriate processes.

And watch out! Your phone might not actually be R4ED001 at present, XS issue i think. In case u're flashing firmware check the service menu.

EROM RED: it's when the phone is for the final user(us).
EROM BROWN: this is when the phone is being developed
EROM BLUE: this is when the phone doesnt have the completed software or it's being developed

flashing the whole package? you mean a full flash(MAIN and FS)?
making a full flash you will get your phone as it were formatted. putting drivers to your phone means that you change the drivers, as in the camera or acoustic(audio controller). you dont need to flash your phone if you want to upload drivers to your phone.
hope i made myself clear
