Ok, so this is the problem....
Anyways, I had improved the theme a bit... The download link is below:

But thanks ever so much for getting to he bottom of it!! I guess I could try the new protected folder hack and change it, but with no way of specifying white text...and it would make changing themes a bit of a bother. Hey ho - think I'll live with it

Yes, it's odd.
It wouldn't be a problem to add this png file in a theme, but I have checked the theme.xml file and it seems as if SE hasn't assigned a replaceable category for it (which would appear in the SE Theme editor anyway, if it would exist).
So we are stuck with this one.
The only solution would be, as you said, to modify the original file..
Another thing I've noticed is that Z:\\private\\101F6278\\Skins contains all the elements which are replaceable by a theme:

This theme has no theme.xml file in it - so the phone wouldn't know what to put where - I'm therefore not even going to attempt it.

Unless they've maybe added a new category to the .xml, it seems they update the editor when a new device is commercialy available - so I do think there might be a possibility of this issue being fixed sometime.
