The latest spin-off from Cern, the particle physics centre that created the web, the grid could also provide the kind of power needed to transmit holographic images; allow instant online gaming with hundreds of thousands of players; and offer high-definition video telephony for the price of a local call.

David Britton, professor of physics at Glasgow University and a leading figure in the grid project, believes grid technologies could “revolutionise” society. “With this kind of computing power, future generations will have the ability to collaborate and communicate in ways older people like me cannot even imagine,” he said.

Yeah i can't imagine too what kind of hardware requires to transmit&process holographic images all in a seconds, maybe at least

-12 core processor
-12gb ddr8 ram
-8gb nvidia/ati videocard w/directx 12support
-10tb hdd space @15000rpm
-Gigabroadband connection
-10ghz broadband modem!

Seems to me that ppl will stay in their homes. Socialising in real world will be obsolete. Sad...

"The Grid" sounds very much like something out of terminator lol. All we need now is Microsoft to change its name to Skynet...

The power of the grid will become apparent this summer after what scientists at Cern have termed their “red button” day - the switching-on

I don't understand whats new in this.

It uses the same fiber optics and equipments as our ISP's backbone, infact there are backbones which are capable of 8Tbps+ today..
If its the grid computing they are talking, they already exists. (amazons EC2).
If they are talking about speed ask the jap's,korean's,swede's et al.They already have 100M/100M or better..
Those FIOS are ready for 1Gbps to home any day..

So if ya ask me its the same hype about the internet2!

I think that bandwith only sufficient for less than 1000 people if they used "the grid" while nowdays connection 8tb is sufficient for hundreds million ppl
